To support safety and public health during the Covid-19 pandemic, all on-campus events are canceled until further notice.

This was originally going to be a post about how to avoid stress at Hopkins, but considering the events of the past few days, I thought I’d adapt it into a list of things that we, the Hopkins community, can do to keep our spirits up even as the world seems to be collapsing around our shoulders. While we may be unhappy with the results of the 2016 election, we need to remember that the world is still full of hope and kindness and things to be thankful for. Here are a few of those things:

Go to late night.

After a long, arduous day, there’s nothing like a stack of pancakes with maple syrup or a plateful of waffle fries to cheer me up. It’s a time when I can sit and talk with friends, take my mind off work and classes and midterms, and eat long into the night. Some of my best memories are the times I spent hours in the FFC, making iced coffee and milkshakes and talking about everything from the weather to the persistence of gender stereotypes.

Get a muffin.

I definitely didn’t feel weird walking into Brody, snapping a picture of the muffins, and leaving.

The muffins in the Brody café are amazing. I usually get one on Thursdays, since it helps ease the pain of Calc section + Calc PILOT + all the Calc homework I inevitably have left. I highly recommend the black bottom muffin: chocolate with a cheesecake center.

Look at/pet some dogs.

One thing I love about Hopkins is that there are always plenty of dogs roaming around. The other day as I was walking to my 9 a.m., I saw a chihuahua in a hot pink coat trotting faithfully behind a well-dressed woman across the Brody terrace. The dog followed her into Krieger, down to the second floor, and into what I assume was her office. Just the sight of it was enough to make my day. If you can’t manage to spot any real live dogs, the Dogs of Hopkins instagram is a great alternative.

If you’re looking for a distraction from reality, even if only for a half hour or so, there’s no better way than to step inside the world of your favorite show. Protip: if you watch while simultaneously doing something productive, like folding laundry, using the elliptical, or doing particularly easy homework, it doesn’t even feel like you’re wasting time.

Do something different.


Look how happy we are, even though we failed!

A couple weekends ago, my friends and I took a trip to Escape 45, an amusement center in Mt. Vernon. The employees lock you in a room and give you 45 minutes to find the clues and solve the puzzles to escape. We didn’t manage to figure it out in time (we were so close though), but it was still a lot of fun and a much-needed respite from the rigors of college life. Whether it’s a quick visit to a new café in Hampden or a day trip to a different city, getting off campus and taking a break from routine is an instant mood-booster.
