How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? My family has always had hopes of me going to a great university, so they’ve done everything they can to make this happen. My aunt took me on a college trip and we just so happened to check out Johns Hopkins. Something just clicked, and I knew that Hopkins was the place for me. Applying Early Decision just seemed like the best option.
Who is the most influential person in your life? I can’t imagine what my life would be like without my mother.
If you could teach one class at Hopkins, what would it be? (already exists or invented by you!) A Look at Black Culture Through the Evolution of Black Hair.
Is there a quote or motto that inspires you? What is it and what does it mean to you? “Watch [black people] walk, watch us move, watch us overcome, listen to our voices, the sway. The resilience. The innovation. The raw, unfiltered and untouched soul we have can not be touched.” – Solange Knowles. This quote inspires me to be unapologetically my best, blackest self and love it.
How has your family background or life experiences shaped you? Having parents who came from two different sides of the Black community has given me a world perspective that many of peers don’t have. If my grandparents had raised them differently, I don’t think my parents would have ever met or fallen in love, so I wouldn’t even be here. But also, I wouldn’t possess the ambition or drive for success that I do. I succeed not only for the betterment of myself, but for the betterment of my family and community.
What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? Always take the advice of those who offer it, but never let it be the deciding factor. Your feelings and desires have to the deciding factor.
What fictional character do you most relate to or most closely represents you as a person? Geniece Hightower from Virgin Soul by Judy Juanita.
What is the accomplishment you’re most proud of? I’m most proud of being able to not just recover from my concussion, but being able to come out better.
What are you most excited for about college and/or coming to Hopkins? The abundance of opportunities that I will have access to, in all areas.
What book, album/song, or TV show has had a profound influence on your life? I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.
What crazy invention would you love to design? Automatic Hair Braider.
What do you hope to get involved in on campus? I want to get involved in student government, band, LGBT+ life, Black students life, etc.
If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? Coffee and Caramel Ice Cream with Maya Angelou.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Beginning my career in politics.
If you could give your junior-year-of-high-school-self one piece of advice, what would it be? Don’t worry so much about what those other kids think of you, because in a few years, you will have risen so far above them, they won’t even matter.
