Name: Adyant B.
Hometown: Bangalore, India
High School: Bishop Cotton Boys’ School
Anticipated Major: Electrical & Computer Engineering, Neuroscience
How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? Hopkins is really well known in India for its medical school. Honestly, I applied ED with the thought of “Nothing to lose and everything to gain”. Guess it paid off!
Who is the most influential person in your life? My father. The two of us are really different people, so we work together well.
If you could teach one class at Hopkins, what would it be? (already exists or invented by you!) Improv Theatre – I really need a team to work with, so I might as well create one.
Is there a quote or motto that inspires you? What is it and what does it mean to you? “Nec Dextrorsum, Nec Sinistrorsum”. I’ve ended most of my speeches with this school motto, meaning “Neither to the left, nor to the right”. For someone who does a lot of different things, it reminds me not to flit between too many things at the same time.
How has your family background or life experiences shaped you? I’ve tried so many different things through my childhood either by my own will or because my parents had signed me up. For one month I used to wake up at 4 am to go for rowing lessons at a lake which I fell into everyday without fail. I taught violin for two months before I couldn’t find time in my schedule after which I struggled to do the same over Skype. I’ve learnt always to look forward to new experiences, and their outcome never dissuaded me from trying something else.
What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? Remember everything you learnt? Yeah, don’t really pay much heed to it, most of it is wrong.
What fictional character (Hermione Granger, Holden Caulfield, etc.) do you most relate to or most closely represents you as a person? I would like to compare myself to Ford Prefect, but I’m more of an Arthur Dent, floating through space, clueless but somehow alive.
What is the accomplishment you’re most proud of? I once successfully used a pressure cooker. Those things blast if you do it wrong. Also, I was in the movie “Life of Pi”
What are you most excited for about college and/or coming to Hopkins? Definitely the people. I was born in Mumbai where I lived for seven years, and now Bangalore for 11 more. Each had its own type of people, and I’ve stayed in one place too long. It’s a good time for a change.
What book, album/song, or TV show has had a profound influence on your life? P.G. Wodehouse and the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy both have heavily influenced my writing and my language. If you look closely at the books, you can see the British accent leaking out.
What crazy invention would you love to design? Augmented reality glasses that react to involuntary eye movements. Imagine looking at the world around you, but it’s now customizable.
What do you hope to get involved in on campus? The Model UN team.
If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? The mashed potato flavour with Charlie Brown, and hopefully Snoopy shows up.
Complete this sentence: “I would not be here on this journey to Hopkins if it weren’t for _________________________ (person/place/thing/experience/etc.).” Orville and Wilbur Wright (Sea travel is dreary)
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? (dream big!) CEO of a Wearable Tech company called POS.
If you could give your junior-year-of-high-school-self one piece of advice, what would it be? Don’t sleep in class.
