How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? I first watched a movie called “Gifted Hands: the Ben Carson Story” when I was young, and that’s when I first came to learn about Hopkins (Carson was the director of the neurosurgery department). Something about the vibe of the movie, about a little boy who came from a small upbringing to achieve unprecedented success, struck a note within me, a note that I came to associate with Hopkins! Later, when I visited Hopkins in person, I knew I had to apply ED!
Who is the most influential person in your life? My mock trial attorney advisor!
Is there a quote or motto that inspires you? What is it and what does it mean to you? “The piano keys are black and white, but they sound like a million colors in your mind.” I heard this quote in a song once, and instantly loved it. To me, it reminds me that there is so much diversity and uncertainty to all facets of life that I have just not discovered yet, and that creativity and out-of-the-box thinking can uncover a lot that was previously thought of as impossible!
How has your family background or life experiences shaped you? My family has (and is still trying to) teach me one life lesson: there needs to be balance in life. Your high spirits and impulsive fun needs to be balanced by hard work and vigilance.
What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? Just breathe! Close your eyes, and think about what you really care about! It’s hard, but with all the requirements that the college process requires, its easy to get swept by a powerful stream of meaninglessness. By taking a moment to reflect upon who you are and what you want, you’ll be able to approach the college search with much needed calm and clarity!
What are you most excited for about college and/or coming to Hopkins? I am very excited to interact with all the intelligent and diverse individuals at Hopkins! I also cannot wait to not only delve into academia and research, but also further my goal of making a wider positive impact among the local community.
What book, album/song, or TV show has had a profound influence on your life? I know this is a movie, but the Lion King had a very big impact on my childhood!
What crazy invention would you love to design? The microbots that Hiro made in Big Hero 6.
What do you hope to get involved in on campus? I want to get involved with research, club teams such as Model UN (or maybe Mock Trial), and intramural basketball. College is also a time to try something new, so I’m hoping to also do that!
If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? I would get ice cream with Ishmael Beah at the Ben and Jerry’s Waterbury factory. As for flavor, I’m a very spontaneous person, so I’d get the most unique flavor I see.
Complete this sentence: “I would not be here on this journey to Hopkins if it weren’t for _________________________ (person/place/thing/experience/etc.).” A local research program called Energize Andover. It has opened my eyes up to computer programming and data analytics throughout the years, and in turn, given me a passion in a field that I initially thought I would never pursue in the slightest!
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? (dream big!) I see myself applying to a competitive residency program.
If you could give your junior-year-of-high-school-self one piece of advice, what would it be? Don’t procrastinate, and go for it, because you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take!
What are you most excited to do in Baltimore? I really feel like the more people from different places that you get to meet, the more you will come to understand yourself. As I have lived most of my life in suburban Boston, I can’t wait to interact with and be a part of a bustling city like Baltimore!
