How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? When I first set foot on the Hopkins campus, I knew right away it was the school for me. What stood out to me most was the incredible level of passion; just walking through the campus and seeing students constantly immersed in their interests and research inspired me, and showed me that Hopkins is an environment where determination and creativity thrive. I experienced this passion for myself when I attended a Hopkins overnight in September. My favorite activity was the scavenger hunt, because the excitement and motivation of both the prospective students and our group leader made me fall in love with the school even more.
Is there a quote or motto that inspires you? What is it and what does it mean to you? “Vincent Van Gogh. Everyone said to him, ‘You can’t be a great painter, you only have one ear.’ And you know what he said? ‘I can’t hear you.'” -Steve Carell in Dinner for Schmucks / I love this quote because it stresses the importance of self-confidence. The most meaningful opinions are not how others see you, but how you see yourself and your accomplishments.
What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? Search for what inspires you. The school you end up attending should be one where you can be excited to wake up every morning, and where you are surrounded by people who encourage you to do what you love. When you begin looking at colleges, don’t just look to see if you’ll “fit in” there; see if it’s a school that inspires you.
What is the accomplishment you’re most proud of? Every year, my the music program at my school has a Cabaret Night where students can audition to perform an act. My sophomore year, my friends and I arranged and choreographed an acappella song with a sort of overly-complicated patty-cake routine to go along with it. We made it into the show and performed, and my favorite part was knowing that everything we were performing was entirely the product of our own hard work.
What book, album/song, or TV show has had a profound influence on your life? San Francisco by The Mowgli’s
What do you hope to get involved in on campus? I hope to get involved in theatre, acappella, and some outdoors/environment clubs on campus! I’m currently in an all-female acappella group at my high school, and I’d love to be a part of the Sirens one day. I also want to help write for Hopkins Insider.
If you could give your junior-year-of-high-school-self one piece of advice, what would it be? Chill out! Yes, college is important, but you’ll make things much easier for yourself if you relax a bit and know that it’ll all work out eventually.
