How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? One day, our regional admission officer visited my school for a lunchtime presentation. I just happened to stop by, but I soon became enamored with Hopkins’ strong engineering curriculum! As a future BME major, Hopkins offers me a a multitude of resources to help me discover the direction my interest will take.
If you could teach one class at Hopkins, what would it be? (already exists or invented by you!) The Ethics of Star Trek.
Is there a quote or motto that inspires you? What is it and what does it mean to you? “True scientific discovery renders the brain incapable, at such moments, of shouting victoriously to the world ‘Look at what I have done! Now I will reap rewards of recognition and wealth!’ Instead, such discovery instinctively forces the brain to thunder, ‘WE did it!’” It’s a long one, but this quote by Clair Patterson reflects my philosophy that cooperation lies at the heart of scientific innovation and certainly parallels my experiences in my mentorship at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Rehabilitation Technology and Haptics Lab.
What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? Figure out what excites you, and then find colleges with programs catered to your interests. Even if you don’t know what you want to study, being at a college with other people who share your passion will be far more enjoyable than going somewhere with good stats or amenities that can’t provide the academic pursuits you seek.
What fictional character do you most relate to or most clearly represents you as a person? Don Quixote.
What is the accomplishment you’re most proud of? My Girl Scout Gold Project, in which I built a Little Free Library for children who learn English as a second language to practice their reading skills.
What are you most excited for about college and/or coming to Hopkins? I’m looking forward to conducting research!
What book, album/song, or TV show has had a profound influence on your life? Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
What crazy invention would you love to design? A real-time translation app that can interpret any language and speak in the voice of your favorite historical figure or celebrity.
What do you hope to get involved in on campus? I would love to get involved in community service, especially with Red Cross, and in the Biomedical Engineering Society.
If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? I’d take Clair Patterson out for some mochi ice cream.
Complete this sentence: “I would not be here on this journey to Hopkins if it weren’t for __________________.” An engineering showcase where biomedical engineering students were showing off a simple blue LED display to treat jaundice in newborns. The fact that one of the presenters had jaundice herself as an infant reminded me how profoundly biomedical technology touches our lives.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I see myself in a Medical Scientist Training Program on my way to becoming the director of a biomedical research lab some day!
If you could give your junior-year-of-high-school-self one piece of advice, what would it be? Don’t stress so much! Just try your best in what you really care about, and the rest will follow.
What are you most excited to do in Baltimore? I would love to get involved in community service and meet some amazing Baltimoreans!
