How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? After deciding to go into the sciences, I discovered Hopkins through its reputation. I also had a friend in the grade above tell me to visit because she thought I would fit in. When I went to visit, I was mesmerised by the labs and the beautiful campus, and the tour guides made me feel at home. During the tour, two students wheeling a cart shouted at the group “Come to Hopkins! It’s the best school!,” and it just stuck with me because it showed how much they really loved their school. A few months later I received a package with cards in the mail, with which I could make something. As I built my tower I thought about how cool and creative it was for a school to advertise this way, and at it confirmed my gut feeling to apply Early Decision to Hopkins.

Is there a quote or motto that inspires you? What is it and what does it mean to you? “Be truthful, gentle, and fearless” – Gandhi This quote inspires when I am feeling discouraged, stressed, or lost. When I feel discouraged, this quote reminds me that I should not let my fears or others’ opinions get the best of me. When I am stressed, it reminds me to calm down and puts things into perspective; there are many other things that are more important than the problem stressing me out at the moment, and this problem will not last forever. Lastly, when I feel lost, the quote guides me by telling me that if I am truthful and gentle towards other, and fearless within, I will find my way.

How has your family background or life experiences shaped you? I am half Argentinean and half German, and I lived in Hong Kong for five years. This background has made me a blend of many different cultures and customs. I feel like I have different sides of me that I show at different times. In Hong Kong, I’m a city girl, getting to all of the secret hotspots using the MTR (subway). In Argentina, I live on my grandparent’s ranch and feed the pigs our leftovers. With my German family, I sing German Christmas carols and eat Spekulatius cookies and ‘Spaetzle mit Gulasch.” And, at school in California, I’m the hard-working nerd who loves to get involved in everything.

What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? Listen to your gut! Don’t stress too much about which college is “the one,” because everything happens for a reason and you will end up going to a school you love.

Where do you hope to get involved in on campus? I hope to get involved in theatre and in a community service club. I also want to join a club that is completely unrelated to any of my interests to try out something new, but I don’t know what it is yet.

If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? Mark Twain and Grapefruit Sorbet

What are you most excited to do in Baltimore? I’m excited for the food!
