How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? I was reading about the best colleges for physics, and I loved the research that’s happening at Hopkins. I visited and had an overnight, and every person I met made me love the Hopkins community more. The overnight really sealed the deal for me.
Is there a quote or motto that inspires you? What is it and what does it mean to you? “The oppressed are allowed once every few years to decide which particular representatives of the working class are to represent and repress them” -Karl Marx
Of course, I love most of Marx’s quotes, but this one stands out as vital to remember. It speaks to the state of both our government and governments of similarly unequal countries around the world. It reminds me that the struggle for liberation of all kinds is not new, it’s a battle that has been fought throughout human history. We can learn from past successes and failures, and we need to never stop fighting for equity and justice.
What is the accomplishment you’re most proud of? I got over 9/10 from all judges in my first slam poetry competition.
What book, album/song, or TV show has had a profound influence on your life? I can’t choose just one, so both the documentary 13th and the book Stone Butch Blues.
If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? I would have mint chocolate chip with Leslie Feinberg.
What are you most excited to do in Baltimore? The activist scene!
