How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? I went on a college visit with my friend and her mom because she knew a researcher there. I wasn’t really interested in Johns Hopkins, but after the tour I knew this was the college I wanted to go to. Deciding to apply Early Decision was fairly easy for me because Johns Hopkins was my first choice and if I got accepted I knew I would go so in my mind there was no reason for me not to apply early.

Who is the most influential person in your life? My grandma is the most influential person in my life because she is an example of how you can accomplish anything if you work hard enough. She is an immigrant from the Dominican Republic and can only speak Spanish despite this we have a deep connection and she always encourages me to follow my dreams.

What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? My best piece of college search advice is to visit every college you are interested in if possible. For me, there were colleges that I thought I would love but when I went there I hated it. You really need to understand the atmosphere because every college is different. If you can’t visit every college than I would at the very least suggest you visit similar colleges. I had no idea what I wanted until I went to a school with 40,000 students and a school with 1,800 students and realized that I needed something in between.

What are you most excited for about college and/or coming to Hopkins? I am most excited about the study abroad opportunities at Johns Hopkins. I have always wanted to travel and I am so grateful for the many opportunities to see new places by doing a semester abroad, traveling during intersession, or doing research in another country over the summer.

If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? If I could get ice cream with one person it would be my favorite author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I have read multiple books by the talented author and I am so impressed by her ability to create such rich worlds out of words. I have always loved reading and have always wanted to travel, so her realistic fiction novels set in Nigeria are the perfect escape for me. Since I am a creature of habit but at the same time like exotic flavors I would get what I always get, coconut ice-cream.
