How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? I discovered Hopkins due to reading “Gifted Hands” by Dr. Ben Carson and was intrigued at the level of intellect of Dr. Carson and the facilities which would employ him. I discovered Hopkins as a result and was dedicated to pursuing my formal education as a Blue Jay.

Who is the most influential person in your life? My grandfather Faustino Herrera or simply “Papi” as he is referred to in my family. He is one of the most intelligent and driven men I have ever had the honor of knowing in my 17 years of life. Originally from Mexico, my grandfather made his way to Texas in the 1950s and married my grandma. From there he opened his own business and worked hard to provide for his wife and 3 children. He remains and inspiration because of his dedication to family and his desire to constantly improve no matter how good his situation is.

What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? Choose a college that challenges you. Choose a place that will keep you on your toes and on the edge of your seat. Life is about the adversity we face day in and day out. When it all comes to an end as is the reality for all of us, no one wants regret. I would say to challenge yourself constantly to improve life for yourself and those around you in order to have no regrets in the end. As long as you learn everyday and challenge yourself everyday, you will succeed in the long run.

If you could give your junior-year-of-high-school-self one piece of advice, what would it be? Do not wish to grow up too quickly. As exciting as it is to be a senior in high school ready for the big jump to college, sometimes it seems as if life is spinning very quickly. To myself as a junior and even earlier than junior year, I would say to work hard, dream big and savor every moment because one day a big chapter in your life will be over and done with and real life will begin.
