student Betty

Name: Betty H.

Hometown: Vancouver, Canada

Anticipated Majors: Biology, Computer Science

How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? I first learned about Hopkins through a science teacher at our school. In Science 8, I discovered my interest in Biology and wanted to study more of it in the future. During a conversation I had with my teacher, she talked about Hopkins and I set it as my dream university. When applying, I did not hesitate to shoot for my dreams and choose Hopkins.

Who is the most influential person in your life? My older sister, she’s almost the complete opposite of me, but she always knows how to cheer me up.

Is there a quote or motto that inspires you? What is it and what does it mean to you? “Just keep swimming” – Dory from Finding Nemo It’s something I say to encourage myself to keep going and not to give up.

What book, album/song, or TV show has had a profound influence on your life? Does Tom and Jerry count as a TV show? It is my favorite cartoon and I still watch it to destress.

What do you hope to get involved in on campus? There are so many clubs I want to join. I would love to join the badminton club and find people to play with. I’m also interested in doing theatre lighting so maybe I could get involved with something related to that.

If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? I want to get maple syrup flavored ice cream with my childhood friend. We lost contact because I left China when I was 8, I want to meet up with him to chat and introduce him to maple syrup.

Complete this sentence: “I would not be here on this journey to Hopkins if it weren’t for _________________.” My family’s continuous support.

If you could give your junior-year-of-high-school-self one piece of advice, what would it be? Stop panicking and just do what you want to do. Try new things and take all the opportunities you get.
