How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? I first remember reading about Johns Hopkins in science articles and news reports, not thinking much about it. As senior year approached and I began to research possible colleges, I was drawn towards their stellar pre-med track and the opportunities at research. However, I wasn’t fully convinced to apply Early Decision until I visited the campus, while it was raining. Rainy weather is probably my least favorite, but I realized then that, rain or shine, this was where I wanted to be for the next four years.
Is there a quote or motto that inspires you? What is it and what does it mean to you? “Imagine all of our lives are like our own individual jigsaw puzzles. And as we’re going through life, we’re just slowly piecing it together, bit by bit, based on experience and lessons that we’ve learned, until we get the best picture. But the thing is everyone has also lost the box for their jigsaw. So none of us know what the image we’re trying to make is, we’re just confidently guessing.” – Daniel Sloss
Although this is a fairly lengthy one, this quote reminds me that it’s okay to be uncertain of what I’m doing in my life, and that it’s okay to fail, so long as I work towards creating my best picture. It inspires me to explore new options and take chances. There is no certainty of what anyone’s future is or what is going to happen, but as long as we work towards our goals and what makes us happy, there’s no way that failure will overcome success.
What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? Do not feel forced to apply to a lot of schools or schools that you aren’t truly interested in going to. Remember: this is where you will be spending the next four years of your life. Make sure to visit the campus, as it can completely change your perspective!
If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? If I could get ice cream with one person, it would be with Hasan Minhaj, and I would get cookies-n-cream, which is my go to ice cream flavor if I can’t pick another one.
If you could give your junior-year-of-high-school-self one piece of advice, what would it be? Dream big, but don’t get carried away with school or extracurriculars unless it’s your passion. Work hard, but remember to step back every so often and take a break. Relax, make time for things that truly make you happy, and everything else will come together for you.
