How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? I first heard of Hopkins when my mother attended medical conferences there, as well as in numerous medical references in TV shows and movies. I researched the university during high school, and the world-renowned science and medicine research opportunities at the university were an instant draw. This, combined with premier humanities departments in subjects such as creative writing and international relations along with a pioneering biophysics department, led me to consider applying early. A visit to the campus confirmed that decision, and soon enough I had applied.
How has your family background or life experiences shaped you? Being a first-generation Pakistani-American has allowed me to gain a unique perspective of both cultures and try to connect them for others as well. I hope to contribute to the mutual understandings of these cultures so we can continue to bridge the gap in communication that many experience.
What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? I would suggest to find subjects or fields that you are passionate about and to research universities that have the best opportunities in those areas. Also, try to get a feel for the campus culture and student environment and see which combination of these opportunities are most attractive to you.
What are you most excited for about college and/or coming to Hopkins? The fellow students and the research opportunities! I hope to meet all the talented students at Hopkins who are also extremely dedicated to their passions and can share their own perspectives about their cultures and backgrounds etc. Also, as a high school student in rural Wisconsin, finding places to learn or conduct research in the STEM fields had always been a challenge, but with Hopkins’ groundbreaking research labs and departments, I hope to make my contributions to the advancement of our understanding of the sciences.
What book, album/song, or TV show has had a profound influence on your life? There are too many to decide from but the books “Remains of the Day” by Kazuo Ishiguro and “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson were quite profound along with the TV shows “House” and “Psych.”
What do you hope to get involved in on campus? I hope to get involved with the outreach and volunteering organizations that are able to positively impact the surrounding Baltimore area. I also hope to join the various social and health awareness programs and continue to develop my creative writing skills to benefit others.
