How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply?:
I first discovered Hopkins with the Center for Talented Youth (CTY) summer program. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the camp when I was in junior high school. As I then had my first extended experience with Hopkins, I had a lot of motivation to further explore the school. And this time around when it was for college purposes, I recognized Hopkins’ dedication to the science and research community. Hopkins’ great research reputation and abundant offerings in a city setting especially attracted me to its campus.

How has your family background or life experiences shaped you?: Coming from an immigrant family, I get to do a lot of traveling to my parents’ home country – China. I think this has almost given me multiple but interacting identities – one with the urge to preserve and practice my family’s cultural heritage, and another identity that tries to conform to American social values and education. I am happy that I am able to experience this vibrant cultural platform that my parents brought with them to America. Having an additional, foreign background is something I am proud of and cherish, as I think it has greatly widened my outlook on life. I feel as if I have been able to become more open minded and accepting of new ideas with all of my experiences regarding traveling and exploring other cultures in my ethnically diverse community.

What are you most excited for about college and/or coming to Hopkins?: I am most excited about meeting people from around the country and around the world who all share a deep passion for learning. I am super hyped to learn about each others’ interests, and to grow as students and people with my fellow classmates. I am a firm believer that the best way to improve as a student is to be receptive and learn from your peers’ opinions. That makes me very excited to interact with others and exchange our different expertise and knowledge. I can’t wait to meet other members of the Hopkins community, explore many opportunities on and off campus, and embark on our college journey together.
