FAQ

Name: Elaina R.

Hometown: Marietta, GA

Anticipated Major: Biomedical Engineering

How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? At first I just added Hopkins to my list of applications because it was the best for biomedical engineering, but then in July I got an email about HOME and the Fall Overnight. When I attended the Fall Overnight in October, I was amazed by how comfortable I felt. Even as a high schooler, I didn’t feel like I was getting judged and everyone was helpful. My host and her friends also showed me how much fun it can be to live there, and they were all supportive and sure I would get in (well, they were right). I decided to apply Early Decision before I even left because I just knew I would fit there.

If you could teach one class at Hopkins, what would it be? I’d love to teach a class on human anatomy! I took an anatomy course this year and it’s probably the best class I’ve ever been in. I loved every minute of it, and I know a great deal of that came down to my teacher. I’d like to think that I could make just as big of an impact on my class as she did on me.

Is there a quote or motto that inspires you? What is it and what does it mean to you? “It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be” – Albus Dumbledore I like how this quote can work in two different directions: you can be born less fortunate but if you work hard you can still make an impact on the world, and it doesn’t matter how great your parents are if you don’t decide to go after things yourself. This quote can help remind me that I still need to work just as hard as everyone else no matter what gifts I’ve been given and throughout my life I can keep working to become even more than I am.

What are you most excited for about college and/or coming to Hopkins? Living in the dorms! Just living with friends who like to do the same things as me and who I can trust to be responsible (and maybe they’ll be able to convince me to get out of my comfort zone).

What do you hope to get involved in on campus? One of the many a Capella groups. I was in chorus for 7 years and this year is my first time not doing it. I don’t miss the program I was in, but I still miss singing and I’d love to perform with a group of great people and great singers.

What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? Visit all the schools you can! I wasn’t going to apply to Hopkins until I visited, and I’d hate to think of how my life might be different somewhere else.

What is the accomplishment you’re most proud of? (big or small!) The shower caddy that was hanging off of the shower head in my bathroom would always slip down away from the wall and scare my sisters and I. A couple of years ago, I decided that enough was enough. I tied a hair tie around the shower head to keep the caddy from slipping and it held until tonight! Tiny accomplishment, but I’m glad I did it.

Complete this sentence: “I would not be here on this journey to Hopkins if it weren’t for _________________________.” The STEM magnet program I’m in. It requires a research internship and allows me to take more academic classes than the average student, especially math or science classes, and I’m really glad to be going into the rest of my life with everything I’ve learned here.
