How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? I discovered Hopkins through my college counselor, who suggested the Humanities Overnight in March. I was interested, so I applied, and I got in. The minute I stepped on campus, I felt at home. The downtown was so lively and perfect, the classrooms and buildings were so beautiful, and all the staff and teachers were so supportive. All the people I passed by smiled at me, and when I went back to my host’s dorm, her friends came by just to see us and say hi. I felt like the vibe of JHU was challenging, but instead of a competitive environment, it was a collaborative one. I decided to apply Early Decision because I don’t think I could find anything as supportive and challenging in any other school, and I felt so at home on campus.

Who is the most influential person in your life and why? My mother is the most influential person in my life because she is the definition of perseverance and determination. An immigrant, she worked hard to establish a life in San Francisco, and she has done everything in her power to ensure that I had a bright future from a young age. Working long hours and multiple jobs, teaching me the value of hard work and honesty, while still making time to cook me delicious food and spend time with me. Without her, I would not be the person I am today and I would not be where I am today.

If you could teach one class at Hopkins, what would it be? (already exists or invented by you!) I would teach a class in analyzing symbols and literary devices in Netflix shows and movies. There are so many classes dedicated to analyzing books–which is great and necessary. But I think TV shows and movies deserve the same treatment. Shows like Breaking Bad or movies like The Godfather are rich with symbolism, and I wish I could talk about it in an academic setting.

If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? I would get ice cream with Michael Scott from The Office because although he’s really obnoxious, I believe that he has a very unique worldview and I would like to pick his brain for it. He would also make me laugh really hard, so that’s a plus.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? (dream big!) I see myself as a popular and successful author whose books have a profound impact on people’s lives. I want to write about issues that are important to people, but I also want to write books that let people escape reality for a little bit that are still important. I want my books to get awards, and maybe–perhaps–a Nobel prize? Big dreams!
