Name: Kaitlyn J.

Hometown: Johns Creek, Georgia

Anticipated Major: Political Science

How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? I discovered Johns Hopkins in 7th grade when I came across its SET program, which opened many opportunities for me to explore my array of interests. Coupled with the fact that the first large-scale teaching of political science began at Johns Hopkins, I was immediately drawn in and decided to apply to JHU as my first choice!

Who is the most influential person in your life and why? The most influential person in my life is my mother. She has stuck with me from the highs and lows of my 17-18 years of existence, guiding me through my doubt and uncertainty about the college process, friendships, high school, and life.

If you could teach one class at Hopkins, what would it be? (already exists or invented by you!) I would teach a Philosophy: Metaphysics 101 class!

Is there a quote or motto that inspires you? What is it and what does it mean to you? For me, I made my own motto/phrase to life by. It is “Quiet Confidence”, phrase also referenced by Michelle Obama in her book Becoming on page This phrase is one I wish to live up to, for I believe that believing in myself with confidence in a way that is not overstated or flamboyant is one of the best things I can do for my self.

What are you most excited to do in Baltimore? I’m most excited to take a hiking trip up Vernon, buy food at the Farmer’s Market every Saturday, or check out the Evergreen Museum for my favorite authors’ manuscripts, or walk down St. Paul Street for some fast food.

What do you hope to get involved in on campus? I hope to get involved in the Debate Team or Mock Trial because those are intensely competitive clubs in my field of interest in law and argumentative reasoning!

How has your family background or life experiences shaped you? My family background in the suburbs of Georgia has taught me to appreciate the smaller, modest things in life. I don’t feel a need to define my achievements in numbers; sometimes, a silent walk to our nearby Hmart market is healing and fulfilling for me as one of my favorable memories!

What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? I would tell high school students to really search for a college that they feel truly resonates with them, excluding all name recognition perks. It’s a wonderful feeling to connect with a college in a much more personal way, a connection that cannot be found anywhere else.

What crazy invention would you love to design? I’d like to create an invention that helps individuals with illness, mental or physical, to overcome their burdens through the psychology of their brain. I hope that this invention would provide the motivation they need through positive efforts, acting as an accessible professional therapist service for all.

What book, album/song, or TV show has had a profound influence on your life? My favorite songs are Jung Seung Hwan’s “Snowman” and “My Christmas Wish” as well as “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” by Frankie Valli, both of which have lifted my spirits so greatly I am very indebted. I’ve become engrossed by shows like Stranger Things, Mr. Sunshine, Anne with an E, and of course, I cannot forget FRIENDS, which is very close to my heart.

What fictional character do you most relate to or most closely represents you as a person? I most closely relate to Elizabeth Bennet, a classic example, who I admire for her quirky, witty attitude and love for reading and learning. I do have one more character named Hye-won from a movie called Little Forest 2018, who returns to her childhood home in the countryside of Korea to revisit her love for cooking after experiencing the mentally draining citylife.

What are you most excited for about college and/or coming to Hopkins? I’m most excited about working toward my major and figuring out with concrete certainty my passions and where they align! I love political science, but I am so excited to explore other areas of the spectrum of courses that Hopkins provides.

What is the accomplishment you’re most proud of? (big or small!) I’m most proud of interior designing my room. Though it consisted of simply reorganizing furniture and pasting up notes and pictures on my walls, I love the way my room transformed into a space that represented the epitome of who I am as a creative individual. I’d love to do the same with my dorm room space.

If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? I would get Dark Chocolate ice cream with Malala Yousafzai, who has been my inspiration from the beginning of high school to forever, I imagine. I would also like to get ice cream with Anne Frank, who I have admired since 4th grade in elementary school; perhaps I’ll try Rocky Road ice cream with her. At Jeni’s Ice Cream 🙂

Complete this sentence: “I would not be here on this journey to Hopkins if it weren’t for _________________________ (person/place/thing/experience/etc.).” “my glasses that show the big and small details of life, the very glasses that I view the world through such a lens.”

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? (dream big!) I hope I am an established person in politics and law, as a prosecutor or lawyer in the or with an important role in the justice system!
