Name: Manal M.
Hometown: Valley Stream, NY
How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? My teacher nominated me for the Humanities Overnight Program last year, which led me to read up on JHU as a school and sign up for information sessions and a campus visit. During my campus visit, I realized that I loved the energy, diversity, and passion in the student body and in the faculty, and I could see myself living and studying at Hopkins easily.
What book, album/song, or TV show has had a profound influence on your life? Born a Crime by Trevor Noah (my favorite book)
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? (dream big!) Working as a neurologist for Doctors Without Borders
What is the accomplishment you’re most proud of? (big or small!) Getting into Hopkins!
Is there a quote or motto that inspires you? What is it and what does it mean to you?“I don’t duck nobody but tape” – Nicki Minaj. Nicki Minaj is a role model for kids who grow up near or in NYC, and this lyric expresses her affinity for humor and wit while portraying her ability to face whatever obstacles she has to with confidence and perseverance. She’s not someone who tries to “duck” and avoid her problems—she deals with them head-on, which is exactly is the kind of person I strive to be.
