How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply Early Decision? I discovered Hopkins while on a tour of schools in the area. When I stepped foot on the campus, I could tell by the attitude of the staff and student body that JHU was a place where I could thrive. As a student, I am passionate about the pursuit of knowledge, and I know that my time at Johns Hopkins will provide me with countless opportunities to expand my horizons and discover who I am.

Who is the most influential person in your life and why? My maternal grandmother is probably the most influential person in my life. Despite her age, she lives her life with a sense of vigor and passion that I can only hope to have one day. In her day to day life, she does everything in her power to help and support others, and she has proven countless times that even the smallest of actions can have a big effect on one’s life. Her countless words of encouragement have inspired me to reach for my goals and aspirations, no matter how far fetched they may seem.

Is there a quote or motto that inspires you? What is it and what does it mean to you? My favorite quote comes from one of my favorite books, Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami: “And once the storm is over you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, in fact, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.” This quote not only reminds me of the importance of perseverance, but also the growth as a result of said perseverance. Remaining dedicated while facing adversity inevitably results in a change for the better.

What are you most excited to do in Baltimore? I can’t wait to explore the city, visit museums, and try out new restaurants! Also, as a southerner, I’m excited to finally experience a real winter.

What do you hope to get involved in on campus? I would love to participate in groups related to social/cultural activism!

What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? My best advice would be to keep your options as open-ended as possible. If you close yourself off early in the process, you may miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime.

What book, album/song, or TV show has had a profound influence on your life? All books by Haruki Murakami and Frank Ocean’s album, “Blonde”

What are you most excited for about college and/or coming to Hopkins? I’m excited for the countless options for courses, programs, and internships! I can’t wait to pursue my passions as well as discovering new ones.

What is the accomplishment you’re most proud of? (big or small!) As a sophomore, I studied abroad in Lyon, France, for a year! My time abroad allowed me to grow exponentially as a person, and it really ignited my passion for language and cultural acquisition.

If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? I would get ice cream with my favorite artist and one of my biggest inspirations, Tyler, the Creator, and I would definitely get Jeni’s Cream Puff flavored ice cream!

Complete this sentence: “I would not be here on this journey to Hopkins if it weren’t for _________________________ (person/place/thing/experience/etc.).” I would not be here on this journey to Hopkins if it weren’t for my friends and family. They have been my strongest inspirations and motivating forces throughout my entire life, but especially during my college search/application process.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? (dream big!) In 10 years, I hope to either be finishing medical school or to have already opened my own private psychiatric practice.
