How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply ED? I discovered Hopkins when I was doing preliminary college research in tenth grade and found its website. I decided to apply ED because of its open curriculum, emphasis on collaboration among students and mentorship from faculty, and its excellent Public Health course offerings.

If you could teach one class at Hopkins, what would it be? (already exists or invented by you!) Sudoku Strategies

Is there a quote or motto that inspires you? What is it and what does it mean to you? “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”—Will Durant, 1926 (commonly misattributed to Aristotle). I stared at this quote, which was written on a poster in my sixth grade Music Theory classroom, everyday that year! To me this quote means the meaning of mere words or performative acts pale in comparison to that of genuine, repeated actions. Our self-perceptions are not set in stone, and we can actively improve ourselves and have positive impact on others by putting time into actions that have substance and meaning. The first step towards excellence can be something as small as beginning to implement a habit that can have a lifetime of impact.

What are you most excited to do in Baltimore? I am most excited to meet Evelyn, a freshman in high school that I have mentored for over sixth months. She lives in Baltimore, and I started mentoring her through Centro SOL (Salud and Opportunities for Latinos), which is a Baltimore organization that provides resources, opportunities, and community-building for the Latinx population there. It is also a Johns Hopkins Medical Center organization.

What crazy invention would you love to design? Some sort of air-borne chemical, non-toxic to humans, that can lock the triggers of guns in an effort to prevent shootings in public buildings.

What book, album/song, or TV show has had a profound influence on your life? Moon River as arranged by Jacob Collier

What is the accomplishment you’re most proud of? (big or small!) My biggest accomplishment was managing a voting precinct on the day of the 2020 General Election! I had to set up in the polling place in adherence to CDC social distancing guidelines, power on and oversee all voter check-in machines and tabulation machines, delegate jobs to the other poll workers, handle all voter check-in issues, fill out comprehensive ballot accounting paperwork, and drive all of the ballots our precinct received to the election headquarters in our county after the polls had closed. It was a long day, but I was so proud to have helped other people voted and contribute to the success and integrity of the 2020 General Election!

Complete this sentence: “I would not be here on this journey to Hopkins if it weren’t for _____________ (person/place/thing/experience/etc.).” My parents and the work ethic they’ve instilled in me <3!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? (dream big!) I see myself working for the World Health Organization and making an impact on the state of global women’s health.
