How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply ED? I discovered Hopkins when I was researching universities with strong engineering programs in the United States. After looking into the school, I was instantly attracted to its Mechanical Engineering program and the aerospace track it offered. From the plethora of research opportunities and the football program to its beautiful campus, I realized Johns Hopkins is the place I want to spend the next four years of my life.

What are you most excited to do in Baltimore? I am most excited to catch a football game at the M&T Bank stadium!

What do you hope to get involved in on campus? As a huge fan of Formula One and motorsports, I am super excited about Blue Jay Racing (Baja SAE) and will be joining as soon as I can! I also hope to join the Blue Jays Football Team in the future.

How has your family background or life experiences shaped you? Me, my brother, and my parents moved to Canada when I was 10 years old. While the rest of my family resides in South Korea, we’ve stayed well-connected. They’ve showed me the importance of forming strong relationships and I can feel their love and support from all the way across the globe. Growing up experiencing two different cultures has been a privilege, allowing me to view the world from different perspectives and approach different cultures and people with an open mind. I am also super grateful and proud that I am fluent in Korean!

What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? Have faith in yourself and go for it. Dream big and work hard. Don’t compare yourself to others and be true to yourself. I believe in you!

What book, album/song, or TV show has had a profound influence on your life? Space Oddity by David Bowie sang by Canadian astronaut, Col. Chris Hadfield on board the International Space Station.

What are you most excited for about college and/or coming to Hopkins? Moving across the continent to the East Coast, I am super excited to explore and be a part of the entirely new world that awaits me. I’m excited to make new friends and meet all the amazing people at Hopkins while pursuing my greatest interests!

What is the accomplishment you’re most proud of? (big or small!) I am most proud of helping the Handsworth Track and Field Team win back-to-back North Shore Zone Championships as a sprinter! We brought home the championship banner during our 2017-2018 season and our 2018-2019 season.

If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? If I could get ice cream with one person, it would be with my Grandma who lives in South Korea. I would either get mint chocolate chip or a fruity sorbet.

Complete this sentence: “I would not be here on this journey to Hopkins if it weren’t for _____________ (person/place/thing/experience/etc.).” My Mom and Dad. They’ve always been my two biggest supporters, always believing in me and encouraging me to chase after my dreams. They’ve taught me invaluable life lessons and values and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without them.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? (dream big!) I see myself contributing to the human effort of exploring worlds beyond our own as an aerospace engineer in the space industry. I will also be chasing my dream of becoming an astronaut!
