Name: Cynthia W.

Hometown: Lutherville, MD

Anticipated Major(s): Public Health

How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply ED? Having lived in Lutherville for the past 6 years, I was just 30 minutes away from JHU. I knew a lot of undergraduates who went to Hopkins, but due to the proximity I couldn’t see myself there, wanting to go further away from home. However, after I started doing a deep dive into which colleges I wanted to apply to the summer of my junior year, I saw how Hopkins was truly the right place for me. Not only could I major in public health, a major not offered at a lot of schools, and have access to the top professors and research opportunities, but also participate in a multitude of clubs and continue my interests in music at Peabody. Talking with current JHU students, I slowly recognized that this could be the place where I spent my undergraduate years.

If you could teach one class at Hopkins, what would it be? (already exists or invented by you!) Exploring Various Cultures Through Food. I absolutely love experimenting with new recipes from different cuisines. You can learn so much about the customs and traditions of each group through how they prepare, cook, or eat their ethnic dishes.

What are you most excited to do in Baltimore? Being a foodie, I am SUPER excited to try different restaurants in Baltimore with the new friends I meet at Hopkins.

What do you hope to get involved in on campus? I hope to join Blue Key Society to help with undergraduate recruitment. Additionally, with my culinary skills I want to participate in Cooking 4 Love. Maybe I will even revive my past dancing skills in Lan Yun Blue Orchids Dance Team.

What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? The best piece of college search advice would be truly evaluate and find how each college will best encompass all of your interests. Focus on what this university will offer you and how it will be beneficial to your growth.

What are you most excited for about college and/or coming to Hopkins? I am definitely most excited to be able to become more in control with my academic and personal life schedule.
