How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply? I discovered Hopkins because of its Direct Matriculation program for International Studies. Having the opportunity to study at both Homewood and at The School of Advanced International Studies in Washington D.C. really excited me since I desire to learn more about international economics and how countries interact with each other. Being part of a diverse community of people who are extremely passionate and dedicated also really lighted the spark within me and affirmed me that I wanted to become a Blue Jay.
What are you most excited to do in Baltimore? Honestly, I am just so excited to explore everywhere and everything. It would be amazing to eat out with friends, go to book stores and hang out at cafes! Coming from a small town, I am stoked to live in Baltimore!
What do you hope to get involved in on campus? I hope to get in language and cultural clubs! I love learning about other cultures and as I am currently learning Japanese and Korean, I am ready to get the wheels in motion to get closer to fluency! Also since I never really exercised during high school, I would love to start exercising and even joining a intramural! Maybe Badminton or soccer!
How has your family background or life experiences shaped you? Moving to the United States from Mexico when I was three really opened my eyes in how big the world is. This gave me the curiosity to learn more about other countries and their cultures eventually leading me to my passion for languages. As I strive to become a global citizen, I am determined to learn from others and these experiences led me to the place where I am now.
What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? Pour your heart into your essays! As cliché as it may sound, writing about you is so valuable!! You’ll have fun doing it and you will set yourself apart from others since your essay came from the heart.
What crazy invention would you love to design? I would love to design a machine that automatically cleans your body so you won’t have to. Even though we all must shower, to me it’s not my favorite part of the day…
What are you most excited for about college and/or coming to Hopkins? I am super excited in meeting people from all different backgrounds! I cannot wait to meet others who are also very passionate in what they do and hopefully we could even study together! It is honestly a dream come true having the opportunity to attend a university with such bright minds. I am excited to learn from each other and learn from world-renowned professors!
What is the accomplishment you’re most proud of? (big or small!) I am most proud of receiving the NSLI-Y scholarship by the US State Department to study abroad in South Korea. I’ve been learning Korean for about three years and I’ve always dreamed of going to South Korea to experience first-hand the sights and smells and after all these years of dreaming I am able to go!
If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? It would be an honor to get a Neapolitan with rainbow sprinkles with Yo-Yo Ma. I would want to ask him how he has gotten through life, the ups and the downs, how he’s been able to continue playing for so many years without any injury, and if he is tired of playing The Swan and the Suite No. 1 by Bach. I would fangirl then calm myself since he is someone I really look up to as a fellow cellist.
Complete this sentence: “I would not be here on this journey to Hopkins if it weren’t for _________________________.” I would not be here on this journey to Hopkins if it weren’t for my family. Coming from a Hispanic background we are very close and they mean the world to me. Their support and love has gotten me through the tough times and they are always there to celebrate the success as well. They’ve showed me that through hard work and dedication, you can be successful and that commitment is key; advice that I really keep close to my heart.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? (dream big!) I hope to be traveling around the world discussing economic trends with global corporations or working with the United States government to establish and continue our diplomatic ties with other nations.
