Name: Maeve F.
Hometown: New York City

How did you discover Hopkins and why did you decide to apply ED? My dads’ family grew up in Baltimore and I grew up visiting campus twice a year or more. I always dreamed of attending and getting to live in Baltimore to continue my family ties to the city, as well as attend the institution of my dreams!
Who is the most influential person in your life and why? My dad and grandfather – they both are/were political advisors who earned a lot of respect and helped a huge amount of people. I want to continue their legacy by being the first female in the family to pursue a career of their caliber and do work that helps the same amount/hopefully more people to honor them.
If you could teach one class at Hopkins, what would it be? (already exists or invented by you!) The Geopolitics of Greater Syria during and after the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
What are you most excited to do in Baltimore? Have great dinners at my Grandmas house and great brunches at Miss Shirleys 🙂
What do you hope to get involved in on campus? The equestrian team, dance groups, and language learning groups!
How has your family background or life experiences shaped you? My dads are both very involved in state and national politics and I have learned from a young age to take the unique experience that my parents were able to expose me to at a young age in order to help the most people as possible.
What’s your best piece of college search advice for high school students? Don’t put pressure on yourself to find “the perfect school”. If a school doesn’t feel right, don’t force it. Your gut and character will weed out the wrong fits naturally if you trust it (that sounds corny… but it works!)
What crazy invention would you love to design? A teleportation machine so I can see all of the world without wasting time on a plane 🙂
What book, album/song, or TV show has had a profound influence on your life? Catcher in the Rye will always be my favorite book. The nostalgic theme of innocence drives me to find the beauty in growing up while appreciating my childhood.
What are you most excited for about college and/or coming to Hopkins? Meeting everyone and making a whole new group of friends and learning about everyone’s background.
What is the accomplishment you’re most proud of? (big or small!) Helping start Students Demand Action to raise awareness among students regarding the gun violence epidemic in this country.
If you could get ice cream with one person (real or imaginary; dead or alive), who would it be and what kind of ice cream would you get? Mint chocolate chip with T. E. Lawrence.
Complete this sentence: “I would not be here on this journey to Hopkins if it weren’t for _____________ (person/place/thing/experience/etc.).” My dads.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? (dream big!) Being a political officer in Afghanistan with the Foreign Service OR a combat journalist in any middle eastern region that needs attention.
