Summer 2018 was absolutely one of my best yet. I spent my summer back at home in Orlando learning, traveling, and enjoying my hometown. I was very fortunate to make a connection with neurosurgeon and fellow Hopkins alum Dr. Ravi Gandhi, who I worked with throughout the summer. Alumni’s strong commitment to engaging with and mentoring Hopkins students is, in my opinion, one of the most valuable aspects of the Hopkins experience. Fortunately, I also made time to travel a lot this summer. I visited my friend Sara in Miami, my friends Carolyne and Maria in New York City, and sailed the Greek islands with my family. Below find photos showing the highlights of my summer. I hope you enjoy!

Me at the Frost Science Center in Miami. Me posing on a rooftop in Miami.

My first visit of the summer was to my friend Sara Wilcox in Miami. I was able to enjoy the city with her for a couple days and it was a blast.

Photo of nervous system models at Orlando Neurosurgery.

Working with Dr. Gandhi, I saw patients every Wednesday in clinic. He would explain the case, the patient’s symptoms, the possible diagnosis, and treatment. By the end of the summer, I was able to evaluate imaging and discuss likely diagnoses.

My friend Jeanne getting coffee with me in Winter Park, FL.

A coffee date with my friend, and fellow Blue Jay, Jeanne Kachris at Lineage Coffee. This summer she shadowed the marketing division at Florida Hospital as they rebranded to AdventHealth.

Posing in Washington Square Park, Manhattan. Me covering my friend Maria with an umbrella on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

I was thrilled to spend time in New York City with my dear friends Maria Pagane and Carolyne Davidson, where they were both interning this summer. Savoring the great dining, my amazing friends, and the city I had a visit that can only be described as simply iconic.

My high school friends and I at a farmers market in Orlando.

Strolling the Winter Park farmers market with my friends Carolyne, Maggie, and Mary Kate. Orlando has great farmers markets and the quaint neighborhood of Winter Park is always a pleasure to visit.

Me scrubbed in headed to the OR.

Headed into the OR with Dr. Gandhi. Shadowing neurosurgery was surreal, and I was so fortunate to see so many interesting cases.

Me posing in front of the temple of Poseidon in Sounion Bay, Greece. Ancient Greek sculptures in museum @ Askpelios.

My favorite trip of the summer was to Greece where I sailed in the Saronic Gulf with my family. We visited islands such as Mykonos, Santorini, Poros, Hydra, and others. Even at the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion Bay I still repped my Hopkins shirt. It was such an unforgettable trip and a great privilege to experience the beautiful landscapes, culture, and cuisine of Greece.

All in all, this past summer was my one of my favorites so far. I was able to learn an immense amount about the world of neurosurgery, have amazing travel experiences, and see my great friends. As a Hopkins student finding summer opportunities are especially easy with the great resources provided to us such as Handshake, a site with over 6,000 job postings and internships, and GoHopOnline an online alumni network where you can track alumni willing to mentor you in any field that you could be interested in. With the school year back in full swing it was great to take a moment to reflect on all I did this past summer. Looking forward to the next!
