My day starts at 5:45.

Yes, there’s one of those in the morning. Yes, it’s when my alarm goes off. No, I don’t spring right out of bed; that’d be silly.

I actually get out of bed at 5:53.

Like JHU_Quan, JHU_Geneveive, and I’m sure several others, I’m working a 9-5 internship and pretending to be an adult this summer. I may have mentioned this in a previous post, but I’m working at a global health start up that makes a portable surgical device sterilizer that doesn’t need water or electricity. Super cool!

it’s not a label. it’s a lifestyle.

The only downside is that my company recently relocated to Bethesda, Maryland, which is an hour-and-quarter each way on a good day……and up to 2+hours on a particularly hairy day. Luckily it’s the ~modern day~ and my car comes equipped with a radio, which has usually been tuned to NPR, in an effort to keep up with current events and further pretend to be an ~adult~

But right. My internship.

I’m working mostly in the product development department of my company (which is actually just one person; two if you include me) and have gotten a chance to do several different things, from designing labels for the product to developing instructional manuals to putting together a user feedback survey.

Despite the early mornings and masses of annoying drivers, I’m actually loving it.

I’ve gotten a chance to better understand what I eventually want to do in the future (!), and if we’re being #real, I don’t know if it’s engineering.

Rather, I think my interests lay more in the design side of product development.

Design is incredibly similar to engineering. It’s still problem solving. It’s still helping people. I don’t even know if I can put into words what the true difference is. It’s just….different.

unrelated but i ate this donut a few weeks ago.

We’ll see where this takes me. I’m studying for the GRE this summer (my laptop is currently propped on top of my review book so…still counts?) and starting to compile lists of grad programs and companies to apply to, most of which have been falling under the Industrial Design/ Social Design/ Product Innovation categories.

Though it hasn’t been all work and no play. I’ve spent a weekend in New York ogling at the designs at the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum// hanging out on several boats// catching up with JHU_Ian and JHU_Joseph, cheering on the Orioles, and doing the requisite amount of Just Hanging Out™
